(MDGs) form a blueprint for meeting the needs of the world's poor agreed to by all the world's countries and all the world's leading development institutions. Most nations (over 115) have committed to achieving these goals and they have become the crucial and unifying foundation to our collective efforts worldwide.
Supporting the MDGs, here's how SYF is bringing direct and practical assistance to the people of Malakand Region NWFP, Pakistan. |
Eradicate Extreme Hunger and Poverty.
It is know widely accepted that poverty should not be seen only as a lack of income but also as a deprivation of human rights and unless the problems of poverty are addressed there can be no eradication of extreme hunger and poverty. To eradicate extreme hunger and poverty in Malakand Region, NWFP requires the empowerment of poor people to expand their freedom of choice and action to structure their lives.
As a result the people will be free in the choice of their occupation from social, religious and cultural norms and limitations allowing them to improve their economic situation. |

| Achieve Universal Primary Education.
Education guarantees a prosperous and peaceful society. In Malakand Region literacy rate is unsatisfactory and thus the region is under the spell of talibanization and religious extremism. SYF in collaboration with its partners, through Formal and Non formal Education system, is striving to increase
literacy rate in Malakand region. SYF is also conducting awareness campaigns, advocacy and lobbying to mobilize the government and the people. All these efforts will lead to the realization of achieving Universal Primary Education.

Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women.
SYF believes that the ultimate test of development policy is its long-term effect on the most vulnerable sectors of the society, particularly women and children. To this end, SYF values and supports the central role of women in development.
In the male-dominated and religious extremist society of the Malakand Region, SYF promotes gender equality by making women empower through skill enhancement, education , self employment, legal awareness and access to health facilities. |

Reduce Child Mortality.
Unfortunately in Malakand Region, Religious clergy men are against the vaccination of polio, Small pox, and other deadly diseases to children and inculcating in the mind of the people that these vaccinations are the conspiracy of the western world to control our Muslim population.
To eliminate such negative beliefs from the mind of the people SYF, time to time, conducts advocacy campaigns and also providing voluntary services to vaccination campaigns. |

Improve Maternal Health.
As findings of a survey in some sample areas it is found that Mother Mortality rate (MMR) is as high as 21/ 1000. Most of the mothers and children continue to die of preventable diseases out of sheer ignorance, coupled with lack of safe drinking water, proper sanitation and sewerage.
Safe motherhood practices are next to none. Women are dependant on untrained Dais/ TBAs.Family size in majority area is above 7 persons with very low incomes. Majority of women are not immunized against T.T
SYF in collaboration with CCBs and CBOs is conducting Traditional Dai Training Programme to achieve the following objectives:
Women of the targeted area provided maternal health care at home.
Maternal mortality rate of the targeted area reduced.
Awareness raised about family planning and population control.
Access of the targeted community to family planning products.
Furthermore, SYF is also carrying out lobbying and advocacy activities to compel the government to provide health facilities for maternal women. |

Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases.
To enhance the capacity building of the CBO,s and CCBs SYF has translated and published on self help basis “ Facilitators' guide Let's Talk About HIV Counseling and Testing “ into national language “ Urdu” to ensure the reduction and Prevention of HIV Aids in NWFP.
SYF is carrying out awareness campaigns to aware the general masses about Health Education with special focus on HIV Aids and Malaria. |

Ensure Environmental Sustainability.
The devastating Earthquake of October, 2005 badly affected almost whole population of the district Shangla , NWFP, Pakistan in one or other shape. This natural disaster took about thousands human lives, seriously injured many more persons. Thousands of houses are completely demolished while others are partially damaged.
Apart from scarcity of other basic needs, drinking water problem exists everywhere especially in the minor city of Besham . There were no proper schemes prior the earthquake and what existed have been destroyed. Major drinking water sources are springs where available, use neither hygiene means nor are in sufficient amount.
On 09 th October,2005 SYF Volunteers in collaboration with local CBO started the repairing of damaged water pipe lines on self help basis and restore water supply to some part of the city till evening. The whole process of supplying water to the whole city completed in 5 days. SYF includes rural water and sanitation program, safe drinking water, Detection and Purification of Biologically Contaminated Drinking Water at Malakand region and Participatory conservation and Rehabilitation planning for Forest Resources of Malakand Region in its future plans. |

Develop a Global Partnership for Development.
Goal 8 is a complicated, large-scale effort that is well beyond SYF's missions keeps a laser-focus on what's important to beat the task at hand; to improve the life conditions of people living in Malakand Region. We might address some parts of this goal, but only as a side effect to ensure a prosperous and peaceful society.
We are proud to support the MDGs and feel you will be too. Change begins with each and every one of us. There have been few such chances for humans in the long history of the race to achieve a dramatic turnaround in global development. If not now, when? |
