On Saturday
October 08, 2005 at 8:52 am. a devastating earthquake on
Richter scale 7.6 struck the Kashmir and five northern
districts of Pakistan. The scale of the earthquake
devastation was appalling and majority of the people
lost their lives and livelihoods. Among them Shangla was
one of the disaster prone areas of the earthquake
wreckage which affect almost whole of the population.
This major disaster took about 487 human lives seriously
injured 989 persons in its first instances, and

demolished
thousands of Kacha and Pacca houses. Apart from the 487
human losses and 989 serious injuries the infrastructures
like health facilities, education institutions, link roads,
drinking water supply schemes, and many other
infrastructures of the district were completely destroyed.
Along with the damages of infrastructures, most of the
private properties like houses, agricultural lands, mosques,
shops, and all kinds of livestock were completely damaged.
Most of the affected population of the District Shangla is now shelter
less and now living under the open sky in the severe cold
weather, which is bringing new set of challenges for people
who have already suffered a great deal. In this scenario the
emergency situation is far from over due to onset of winter
and high mountainous topographic nature of the valley. The
UN, Relief Commission, and the international organization
have announced the emergency shelter as a need of urgency
and if proper shelter is not provided to the homeless
people, the consequences will be terrible for the affected
population. In this regard, the response of the Catholic
Relief Services (CRS) is encouraging who are providing more
than 3000 shelters to the affected families; however, some
of the families are in desperate need for the shelter in
this critical time of winter. |
